I understand homicide to be the killing of a human being, be it in murder, warfare, punishment, accident, euthanasia, or suicide.

Some jurisdictions have recognized, or may recognize, a freedom

  • to kill oneself,
  • to get somebody else’s help in this, or
  • to have that person do the job completely.

Freedom is good, but can be misunderstood and abused. For one thing, freedom of choice is not freedom of will. Some choices are made with an impaired will – as Plato has Socrates point out to Cephalus in Book I of the Republic.

Resurrection

There were a couple of tweets on the eve of Easter:

Just a reminder to make sure that you preach a doctrine of the resurrection tomorrow that is not reducible to that of the old IWW song “Joe Hill”


It’s a good song! I find it moving! But if that’s all we have to say about the resurrection (and I have heard many sermons that suggest that it is) – well, we should all be doing something else with our lives.

Fortunately, of course, it’s not all we have to say.
